Human Rights Commission Sierra Leone Trains CSOs, Others on Effective Government Monitoring and Reporting

On Monday, 4th November, 2024, the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) kicked off a two-day training on With the desire to effective monitoring and reporting of regional and domestic treaty bodies, as well as special Human Rights Mechanisms, for their partners in the Northern Region.

It all happened at the Bombali District Council Hall located on the Makeni-Freetown highway, the training according to Commissioner Hassan Samba Yarjah is supported by Irish Aid and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for selected representatives from Ministries, Agencies and Departments (MDAs), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Members of District Human Rights Committees in the Northern Region.

“This training caters for our key partners nationwide, we’ve held similar trainings in the western area and after training participants in the north, we’ll replicate the same training to the Northwest and other regions to energize Ministries, Agencies and Departments (MDAs), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Districts Human Rights Committees Members to play their part the best way to complement our efforts to further raise the human rights bar in Sierra Leone higher,” he explained.

Commissioner Yarjah added that the commission hopes that trainees henceforth will improve on their approaches towards alternative reporting on their monitoring of government and further improve their advocacies for the rights of all and sundry in Sierra Leone to be respected.

The training was facilitated by experienced staff of HRCSL including Sahr Augustine Musa, the Deputy Director and Head of Region- North, and Massah Ruth Kailie, who respectively spoke on the mandates and functions of the commission, and the special Mechanisms and the Universal Periodic Review Processes.

Additionally, the Director of Programmes, Planning Monitoring and Evaluation Mohamed Kuyateh gave an overview of the Functions of Treaty Bodies while Joseph Kamara, the Executive Secretary of the Human Rights Commission Sierra Leone talked the participants Role of Civil Society Organisations and National Human Rights Institutions in Treaty Bodies and the Universal Periodic Review Processes setting the stage for open and close discussion sessions followed by group work and presentations on the Human Rights Indicators.

Speaking to journalists about the training, Joseph Kandeh Turay, the Acting Regional Deputy Director at the Ministry of Social Welfare and Adama Beibie Sesay, the Bombali District Human Rights Commission Vice Chairperson on behalf of the other participants described the training as timely and one that will be very useful to their work. Some of these laws they say most of their colleagues don’t know and the few others know are not largely upheld but with this training I believe all of us will gear up, disseminate the acquired knowledge and increase our speed on monitoring and reporting,” they assured conclusively.

The training is scheduled to end on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 as the commission journey to other regions to conduct similar trainings.
