16 deaths, 8 survivors NDMA releases data of collapsed building

Director General of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) on Tuesday 24 September 2024 announced the total number of deaths and survivors in the collapsed building at Shell New Road on Monday.

He made this statement at the Ministry of Information weekly press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Tower Hill in Freetown.

Lt. Gen. Brima Sesay said when the seven storey building collapsed its hit nearby houses and a nearby Mosque. He said the collapsed building resulted in 16 deaths with eight survivors removed from the rubble.

The DG continued that after the building collapsed, the youths made relentless effort to save the victims.

He praised the efforts of the three engineering companies   namely Gento, Marampa Mines and Sierra Rutile which roles he said were commendable during the rescue operations.

He also registered appreciation for the philanthropic role of the Freetown City Council Mayor and Hon. Princess Kadie Daramy who volunteered to supply food for three hundred youths who were assisting in the search and rescue operations.

He also commended the efforts of NDMA, EPA and other agencies and institutions that played a key role in ensuring that the victims who survived the disaster were taken good care of in terms of medical treatment.
